ABOUT LUCY

After qualifying from the University of Edinburgh and the Institute of Education, and teaching for over 25 years, I am now a full time tutor. I have worked as a classroom teacher, Inclusion Manager and Deputy Headteacher alongside giving private tuition.

As a tutor I specialise in 11+ Grammar School and Common Entrance test preparation, primary school maths and English support, transition into High School, High School maths, and struggling Maths GCSE students.

I teach in central Lancaster, one-to-one at home, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and am happy to work with a wide range of pupils, including those with additional learning needs. My preference is to teach in-person, as I believe that this is provides a better learning experience for the children. I am happy to do lessons online in some circumstances and on odd occasions, when necessary.

During term time I work Monday to Friday from 3.45 - 8pm, and provide daytime lessons for those preparing for the Grammar School tests during the summer holiday. I also teach some daytime lessons for children that are home-schooled.

 MY SPECIALITY

  • Developing a positive and nurturing relationship with pupils and parents

  • Finding and tackling any weaknesses in understanding

  • Step-by-step method of teaching with clear learning goals

  • Teaching failsafe strategies of approach for tests and exams

  • Providing complete familiarisation with test format and a resulting calm mind-set

  • Improving self-belief and resilience

GRAMMAR AND SELECTIVE SCHOOL     TEST PREPARATION

What are these tests?

  • These tests are challenging and only appropriate for children that are exceeding national averages across the curriculum.

  • The 11+ take place at the end of September in Year 6.    I advise starting tutoring at the beginning of Year 5.

  • Lancaster Grammar Schools tests consists of a paper in Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning.

  • Verbal Reasoning includes codes, sequencing and logical problem-solving that most children have never seen.

  • Maths and English papers require extensive knowledge, extremely quick application, and use of a range of strategies in order to secure success.

  • Common Entrance tests sometimes also have Non-Verbal Reasoning papers, that require the ability to understand and analyse visual information and solve problems using visual reasoning.

What is my method?

  • I have developed a full curriculum that covers all aspects of the possible questions in the papers

  • While teaching I build up a picture of the student’s strengths and weaknesses, ensuring any gaps in knowledge or areas of insecurity are dealt with in a focused yet compassionate manner.

  • I organise the time spent on tuition for each paper depending on the child’s strengths and needs, thereby ensuring that they are fully prepared for each.

  • I believe that developing a good rapport with students and parents is vital, and it is always my goal that students love their tutoring sessions and that both pupils and parents feel confident and relaxed for the actual test.

  •  I do not give homework, but always communicate fully with parents suggesting ways that they can support their child's progress.

PRIMARY SCHOOL AND SATS TUTORING
Please note - I am not currently taking any new primary/SATs children

Why have tutoring in Primary School?

  • The foundation to later learning is laid down in primary school.

  • Difficulties with reading and writing knock confidence and negatively impact on learning in other subject areas.

  • Poor self-belief in maths can be hard to turn around, and a strong understanding of the basics leads to competence in more complex mathematics.

  • Children often find it difficult to find the words to express what they do not understand and might not want to admit any lack of learning or confidence - this is particularly difficult within a classroom setting, but much easier when in a one-to-one situation with a trusted tutor.

  • Although I am an experienced Infant teacher, I tend to steer away from tutoring children younger than Year 4, as I feel that after a full day of school most young children require time away from the pressure of learning. Generally, support and stimulation from parents, as guided by schools tends to be sufficient for younger children.

What about SATS preparation?

  • When children are on the brink of leaving primary school, they sometimes need support to review learning and to find the confidence to apply themselves to the SATS tests.

  • I have a wide and varied range of resources designed for this and have taken many classes through this period of their schooling.

  • While supporting learning so that children can produce their best work, I feel that building and supporting their confidence is of the greatest value, and this alone can make a huge difference to their performance.

Why am I the best tutor for your child?

  • Having taught in Primary Schools for over 20 years, I am very familiar with all age groups and subject curriculums.

  • I have very substantial experience of supporting students with additional learning needs as well as being very familiar with stretching and challenging the most able learners.

  • All children thrive in a one-to-one learning environment, especially one in which the teacher has been able to discover exactly where any gaps reside, and in which areas confidence might be lacking.

  • Having that one-to-one experience and building up a secure relationship with a tutor can make all the difference, and the increased confidence itself can also make a great difference to the learning experience in the school environment.

  • As a parent of 4 children myself, I am familiar with the stresses of schooling, and the pressures of homework, tests and exams.

What is my method?

  • To use a child-centred approach where I build up a picture of the student’s strengths and weaknesses, ensuring any gaps in knowledge or areas of insecurity are dealt with in a focused yet compassionate manner.

  • I am always very clear in my learning goals and create lessons plans as a direct result of what is revealed in the previous lesson, via my observations and through discussion.

  • I can also address specific areas of learning that the child is able to identify and will always balance areas that they love to learn about with ones that are more challenging.

  • I believe that developing good rapport with students and parents is vital, and it is always my goal that students love their tutoring sessions and that both pupils and parents can see accelerated progress and increased confidence.

HIGH SCHOOL MATHS

GCSE  MATHS TUITION

Maths is a subject that can cause deep despair and very often results in low self-esteem. Once in this situation, young people can find it very difficult to get out of it, and finding themselves streamed in the lowest maths group, feel like they may as well give up. However, I have found that having been a Primary School teacher for over 20 years I am ideally placed to support the struggling Maths GCSE student.

I love to teach Maths, especially to struggling students, and have a wide range of methods and resources to do so.  I work through all areas of the curriculum, discovering areas of weakness and building up understanding and confidence.  I find that the one-to-one nature of the tuition and my deep knowledge of primary school mathematics gives a perfect opportunity to go back to basics in a respectful and progress-driven manner. The difficulties that most students face in maths is actually based on poor numeracy, and in having not fully understood the number system. I am able to re-set this balance, encouraging students to use and develop what they know without resorting to counting on fingers, or trailing through an entire times table to find out a single answer. Through developing a close and trusting working relationship with the student, I am able to discover where the gaps in learning are and find methods to show the student how closing this gap will result in increased speed and success in solving more complex problems.

It is wonderful to see students’ faces light up as the puzzle of mathematics fits together and they realise that they can use strategies I have taught them to solve otherwise mystifying problems.

I have access to past papers, marking schemes and grade boundaries of all GCSE boards and can tailor my tuition in fine detail, ensuring that students are able to maintain their confidence during their exams, use their knowledge and show their true ability. Grades in mathematics have become extremely important for all careers, and further education courses.  My goal is that students will not only achieve a level 4 or 5 in their GCSE, but also discover the beauty and logic of mathematics!

  • I have extensive experience in teaching High School maths, supporting both students across a wide range of ability.

  • Supporting maths throughout High School of course makes a huge difference to ongoing confidence and success in their eventual GCSE.

  • Confidence in maths feeds through to increased learning and progress in the sciences, and builds all-round self-esteem.

  • Poor confidence in maths often leads to a shut-down in maths learning, as one skill so often leads to another. I am able to build up confidence, independence and skill by working through the curriculum at the correct pace for each individual, building skills perhaps missed in primary school, and resulting in greatly improved progress and confidence in the classroom.

  • Working one-to-one really allows me to build up a picture of strengths and weaknesses, target methods and understanding to support maths across the curriculum.

  • I always ensure that my tutoring sessions are unthreatening and fun, allowing students to feel comfortable and open with their process in maths, and look forward to their tutoring every week.

Thank you so much! She couldn't be happier. Truly thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping E and giving her the confidence to believe in herself.

Parent of Lancaster Girls' Grammar School applicant

We really appreciate the care and support that you have shown Hannah throughout her learning. You have made such a difference to her experience of school and her attitude to learning.

Parent of primary school student

Lucy has been tutoring my 10 year old son, William, for approximately 9 months, in which time William's speed, accuracy and confidence has improved significantly. Lucy initially took time to assess William's aptitude in different areas, then addressed his weaknesses in a focussed and timely manner. Lucy strikes the perfect balance between firm, fair and fun, and William has never had to be reminded or encouraged to be ready for his next tutor session, which speaks for itself. I would highly recommend Lucy to anybody looking to help their child gain confidence and improve in all subject areas.

Parent of Year 6 student

Harvey loves coming to maths tutoring with you, and his lessons at school are now making sense! His confidence has improved so much. Thank you.

Parent of struggling Maths GCSE student

Lucy is very professional, she plans the sessions meticulously. My son finds her approachable and has really opened up to her. He looks forward to the sessions. Great advice and support with his learning. As a qualified teacher myself I highly commend her tutoring skills.
